Help fine tune the Independent Reviewer system

The Advertising Standards Bureau is seeking views about its Independent Reviewer system.

“At the same time as introducing the system in 2008 we also announced that we intended to review the system within a couple of years,” ASB Chief Executive Officer, Ms Fiona Jolly said.

She said the aim of this review is to understand community and industry perceptions about the Independent Reviewer system as it currently operates, so that ASB may improve and enhance the system and ensure compliance with international best practice.

“We are seeking input into the review through a questionnaire and will evaluate the responses and fine tune the Independent Reviewer system if necessary,” she said.

The Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) introduced a review process for Advertising Standards Board determinations in 2008.

Ms Jolly said the role of the Independent Reviewer is to consider the process followed by the Board and to recommend whether the Board’s original decision should be confirmed or reviewed.

“We designed the system, in line with international policy and processes, to give people a speedy and simple opportunity for review of Board determinations. Through this review system, along with our complaints management system, we work to ensure Australians have a robust complaints system that encourages consumer trust,” Ms Jolly said.

“I invite everyone with an interest in advertising self-regulation to take part in our review of the policy and implementation of this system,” Ms Jolly said.

The questionnaire and information documents are available from the ASB website.
