Mohammad Al-Khafaji is from Adelaide and is the former CEO of Welcome to Australia, Hon. Secretary of FECCA and a member of the SBS Community Advisory Committee.
Born in Iraq, he came to Australia in 2003 via Syria as a refugee when he was 13. He completed a Bachelor of Software Engineering at the University of Adelaide in 2012.
He is passionate about changing the national conversation around asylum seekers to a positive one through education and grass roots movements. Mohammad was appointed as the CEO of Welcome to Australia in September 2015, an organisation dedicated to cultivating a culture of welcome in our nation. Mohammad believes cultural diversity makes us richer as a society and he is passionate about ensuring the voice of new and emerging communities are heard and are represented.
Mohammad was a delegate at the Federal Government’s 2020 Youth Summit in Canberra in 2008, awarded the South Australian Governor’s Multicultural award for youth achievement in 2012, and was a finalist in the 2018 SA young Australian of the year awards.
